We received a question through our Ask-A-Hairdresser form - and it's a question that we hairdressers have heard a lot, lately. With new trends showing so much silver goodness cooling down (and heating up) social media, it's no surprise that there are those who want to get out of the root-touch-up routine.

But how to we get there? Elizabeth D. wrote in saying she's ready to ditch the do-over-do, but she's wanting to know the way...
Going from cover-up color to letting your silver shine is a marathon - not a sprint. This is a journey that requires several appointments and understanding of new products that will come into your life.
To blend the grey new growth into the previous color, you will have to lift that previous color out. Color doesn't lift color. It's the reason why you can get a layering affect doing color at home.
So - to lift out old color, we have to lift.The most common way to do this (and often safest on your hair) is through a series of highlighting appointments.
Based upon your hair's texture, porosity and color history, a plan will be put in place.
Be prepared to have some time in between where you're not too happy with it. This is especially true for those who are sensitive to "brassy" or "warm" tones. Talk to your stylist about blue or purple care products that will help cut this down.
Don't let the potential journey discourage you, though. With some great products to help you feel better about lightening (stylists often use Olaplex or B3 Brazilian Bond Builder) you can find a happy road map to your ultimate desired result.
